A Really Big Wave

This is perhaps the biggest wave ever surfed.  This surfer makes it look so easy but surfing waves this big is incredibly dangerous.

  • Holy Cow Andy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may be too old to surf (am I?), but doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the beauty of it.

ABSOLUTE FREEDOM LIKE SAILING IN A HIGH WIND, I TRIED TO SURF ONLY ONCE IN BARBADOS YEARS AGO.I CAUGHT THE WAVE WRONG AND IT BROKE, CRASHING DOWN ON TOP ME AND PUSHING ME DOWN TO THE SEA BED AND DRAGGING ME UP ON TO THE BEACH.I WAS LEFT THERE LIKE A BEACHED WHALE AS THE SURF RECEDED IN FULL VIEW OF EVERYONE, PANTING FOR BREATH AND MINUS MY SWIMMING SHORTS AND CUT FROM THE CORAL REEF. LUCKILY A GORGEOUS BARBADOS NATIVE LENT ME A TOWEL AND TOOK ME BACK TO A BAR, WHERE SHE TENDED TO MY WOUNDS AND GOT ME A LARGE RUM. I THANKED HER IN A TRUE BRITISH TRADITIONAL WAY LATER THAT NIGHT…..BUT THAT’S ANOTHER STORY.

    • I believe this is Mike Parsons surfing a 66 ft wave at the Cortes Banks. That’s about 115 miles west of San Diego. There is a chain of underwater peaks here that are a hazard to shipping as some are only 6 ft underwater but they create these huge waves.
