Bren Smith, a former fisherman, has turned from a hunter of the seas to a farmer of the seas as he has developed an unique vertical 3-D ocean farming model. After working as an industrial fisherman for decades and witnessing the devastating effects of mass-fishing, Smith developed his own ocean farm that he describes as an underwater garden composed of kelp, mussels, scallops and oysters. Those species are not only edible and in high demand but they also are key in rebuilding our natural reef systems. I find the amount of food that can be produced from an ocean farm fascinating and I’m glad that people like Bren Smith are currently revolutionizing our seafood plates while restoring our oceans.
