The United States Marines returned to Makin Island in 2000 to recover the remains of 19 of their fallen Marines from the attack on the Japanese held island by Carlson’s Raiders in 1942. This is a great example of why the Marines motto is “Semper Fidelis” or “Always Faithful” as Marines do everything they can to recover their fellow warriors from the battlefield.
