An interesting look at how Native American lacrosse sticks are made by legendary artisan Alfie Jacques. Native Americans began playing lacrosse as a spiritual and social activity more than 1,000 years ago. The lacrosse sticks were made of hickory and had sacred meaning. Many Indigenous stick artisans went out of business when plastic and aluminum replaced wood in the 1970s. Alfie crafted more than 80,000 lacrosse sticks by hand before he died at 74 years old in June of 2023. RIP Alfie.
